π³π± 2 PhD Positions on Causally Grounded Concepts at U Amsterdam
Location: Netherlands
Deadline: 20 April 2026
2 PhD positions available at University of Amsterdam to improve AI interpretability and safety through causal reasoning.
The University of Amsterdam’s AMLab group is seeking 2 PhD students to work on integrating causal reasoning into AI for improved interpretability, robustness, and safety.
The project, CANES, is led by prof. Sara Magliacane and sponsored by NWO VIDI. The positions will focus on developing methods to learn Causally Grounded Concepts from unstructured data with theoretical guarantees.
- Project 1: ‘Discrete concepts’ – Developing strong theoretical guarantees for dependent and discrete concepts.
- Project 2: ‘Weak supervision’ – Providing guarantees by integrating background knowledge and weak supervision.
Potential applications include cross-species translation in drug discovery and verifiably safe reinforcement learning.
