OIST invites researchers worldwide to apply for its Visiting Programs in FY2026 and FY2027, offering opportunities for interdisciplinary research in a subtropical setting.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is now accepting applications for its Visiting Programs for FY2026 and FY2027. OIST is a department-free university that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among its international community of students and faculty.

Researchers from around the world are invited to apply for opportunities to spend several months on a subtropical island in southern Japan, focusing solely on their research. All fields are eligible as long as the proposed project overlaps with or shares interests with OIST researchers.

  • Thematic Programs in FY2027: Pre-proposals due by September 15, 2025, for groups of researchers to visit for 1-2 months.
  • Visiting Scholars in FY2026: Applications due by September 15, 2025, for visits of 3-12 months.
  • Experimental Visiting Scholars in FY2026: For those requiring lab access.
  • Domestic Visitors in FY2025: Flexible duration with a rolling deadline.

Benefits include travel and visa support, on-campus housing, office space, and access to OIST computing resources. For more information and to apply, visit OIST Visiting Program Application. Inquiries can be sent to tsvp@oist.jp.
