The MER-TRANS-2026 shared task aims to advance automatic easy-to-read translation in Romance languages. Registration is open until 5 March 2026.

The IberLef 2026 Evaluation Forum is launching the Shared Task: Multilingual Easy to Read Translation (MER-TRANS-2026). This task aims to advance the state of the art in automatic easy-to-read translation, focusing on Romance languages such as Catalan, Italian, and Spanish.

The task involves automatically producing easy-to-read versions of texts and/or sentences sampled from the iDEM corpus. Key features include:

  • Up to three submissions per language allowed per participant team.
  • A surprise language task will be revealed closer to the test data release.
  • The iDEM corpus, with original and adapted versions, will be made fully available to the community.
  • Evaluation will be carried out using automatic metrics like SARI, BLEU, and semantic similarity scores.

Participation is open to all, and teams must register using the registration form to access data and submit system outputs.

Important dates include:

  • Registration closes: 5 March 2026
  • Trial data release: 6 March 2026
  • Test data release: 6 April 2026
  • System outputs submission deadline: 13 April 2026
