PhD position in Reasoning in Machine Learning at University of Basel

The University of Basel’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is offering a PhD position in Reasoning in Machine Learning, under the supervision of Prof. I. Bogunovic and Prof. A. Lucchi. The successful candidate will investigate theoretical and practical aspects of reasoning with large language models (LLMs), including diffusion-based LLM architectures.

Key responsibilities include:

• Investigating mechanisms and limitations of reasoning in modern LLMs
• Solving mathematical reasoning problems
• Exploring reinforcement learning strategies to optimize decision-making policies
• Developing fine-tuning protocols for large pre-trained models
