CRNS Talk Series: Dr. Yumi Iwashita on Moons Exploration

Join Dr. Yumi Iwashita from NASA JPL for a talk on exploring moons and preparing for future missions to Europa and the Moon. No registration required.

The Center for Robotics and Neural Systems (CRNS) and the UK-Ireland IEEE RAS Chapter are pleased to announce a talk by Dr. Yumi Iwashita from NASA JPL, USA. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 26th, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM (London time) over Zoom.

Dr. Iwashita’s talk, titled Exploring Moons: Preparing for Future Missions to Europa and the Moon, will cover two key projects:

  • Europa Lander Mission Concept: This project addresses the challenges of operating a lander on Jupiter’s moon Europa, including limited operational lifetime, constrained energy supply, and hazardous environmental conditions. An autonomous software prototype has been developed to test and validate planning and execution strategies for science-driven missions with minimal human intervention.
  • LuNaMaps: This project focuses on autonomous lunar landing, addressing challenges such as insufficient global high-resolution data and extreme illumination conditions. High-quality Digital Elevation Maps (DEMs) and tools to evaluate their accuracy and reliability are being developed to support future lunar exploration missions.
