Funded PhD Studentship in Ethical NLP Research
Funded PhD studentship opportunity in ethical NLP research at the University of Edinburgh, supported by Baillie Gifford.
We are pleased to announce a fully funded PhD studentship opportunity in the Centre for Technomoral Futures and the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.
The studentship, funded by Baillie Gifford, will support rigorous interdisciplinary PhD research into the ethical challenges posed by the growing use of natural language processing and artificial intelligence.
- Investigate how NLP and machine learning contribute to inequities in society
- Show how end-users of NLP technologies can benefit from personalisation and privacy methods
- Examine NLP and machine learning literature for the values that underpin research in the field
- Propose social, infrastructural, or technical mechanisms to limit the harmful ramifications of applying current methods in NLP and machine learning
The project will consider how NLP and machine learning are falling short in engaging with ethical development practices and examine how such practices can be improved for the benefit of end-users and society.
