• Summary: The development of leading Large Language Models (LLMs) is concentrated in a few technology hubs, leaving smaller languages behind.
• Europe needs to build its own foundation models to secure digital sovereignty.
• The talk will present a line of LLM work, from monolingual models for Finnish to current efforts in the OpenEuroLLM project.

Sampo Pyysalo is a lead of the TurkuNLP group and focuses on machine learning for natural language processing.
