Post-doctoral fellowship in Computational Stemmatology for the Hebrew Bible Transmission – Université de Lorraine

The Université de Lorraine is offering a two-year post-doctoral fellowship as part of the ANR SHERBET project, aimed at reconstructing the genealogical lineage of the Hebrew manuscripts through computational stemmatology algorithms. The fellow will be responsible for leading and innovating in the following areas:

  • Developing a Deep Learning model for automatic variant tagging in ancient languages, specifically focusing on Hebrew and potentially extending to Greek.
  • Creating textual embeddings and textual representation of Hebrew words using Neural Networks to define semantic-based distances between them.
  • Utilizing generative adversarial networks for textual generation of Hebrew texts that resemble scribal behavior.
  • Providing Open-Source results, ensuring the software and generated datasets are made available to the public.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in computer science and/or applied mathematics, experience in Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing, familiarity with the Python ecosystem for Deep Learning, data manipulation, and analysis, and knowledge of Classical Greek and Ancient Hebrew. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of French is a plus.

The position will be based in Nancy-Metz, Lorraine, France, starting on September 1st, 2024. To apply, submit a cover letter, full Curriculum Vitae, list of publications, and academic transcripts to frederique.rey@univ-lorraine.fr by June 17th, 2024.
