The Edge Hill University Linguistics Research Group Speaker Series presents a webinar titled ‘Media Representations of Blindness in UK Newspapers: A Corpus-Based Study’ on Thursday, 26th March, 2-3pm via Teams.
Speakers Dr Costas Gabrielatos and Dr Valeria Occelli will discuss their study on the portrayal of blindness in UK newspapers and its influence on public representations.
- The study analyzed the Blindness UK Press Corpus, comprising articles from 2014 to 2023 across ten national UK newspapers.
- Results show blind individuals are rarely granted agency or voice, and references to blindness are largely metaphorical and negative.
